The Mobility and Robotic System’s engineers at NASA are taking space exploration to whole new level through robotics research. At the Jet Propulsion Laboratory this team is constructing and creating software to guide rovers as they explore the terrain on planets like Mars. The software allows these vehicles to move, take samples and even climb over various obstacles on a planet’s surface under engineer direction from Earth. This allows us to take space exploration to a whole new level.

The eyes for these robots come in the form of sensors and cameras that are built into their structure. The sensors play an important role by allowing the robot to take measurements of the surface around it and can better maneuver themselves. The appearance of the various machines depends on their task and the type of terrain that they will have to navigate. Many of them feature numerous legs that help them to climb and wheels for smooth travel.

Their other task while on the surface is to take samples of the surface and analyze them. One robot that is currently on its way to mars has the capability to dig a ditch up to half a meter in length in the planet’s ice cold soil. The current development is also working on getting the capability to take soil samples and then have them come back to Earth for analysis by scientists. This would be done by the robot who will move the sample into a Mars Ascent Vehicle for the return trip.

Robotic surgery has become mainstream and Jerry Dunne is grateful. Dunne is scheduled for surgery for prostate cancer using a relatively new technique in which his surgeon will use a computer and remotely control very small instruments attached to a robot. The instruments are inserted through several small incisions, much like laparoscopic surgery.

Dunne and his wife, Jean, researched the kinds of prostate surgery available in their area. They decided on robotic because there are fewer reported complications like incontinence and sexual dysfunction. Studies show that 97% of robotic patients report no long-term sexual dysfunction compared to 80% with conventional open surgery. Only 4% of robotic patients report incontinence, compared to 20% of those with open surgery.

The robotic procedure is done under general anesthesia – the patient is asleep and pain-free. The surgeon sits at a computer station, directs the robot’s movements, and monitors the surgery with an inserted endoscope (small camera) that gives a highly magnified three-dimensional view of the site. Although robotic surgery can take longer than open surgery, it reduces hand tremors and other movements that can make standard surgery less precise. Because the incisions are very small, recovery is usually faster, with less bleeding and pain. There is also less risk of infection, shorter hospital stays, and smaller scars.

Mr. Dunne consulted his primary care physician before making a final decision and she suggested finding a surgeon who specialized in robotic procedures.  Many hospitals have jumped to join the robotic revolution, but have not provided comprehensive training for staff members. Because of the specialized knowledge and coordination needed, practice does, indeed, make perfect.

Proponents of robotic surgery look forward to expanding using the computer-guided procedures for cardiac bypass, gallbladder removal, hysterectomy, hip replacement, and removal of certain cancers. You don’t have to purchase any parts if you don’t want to, you can just use your old toys that are no longer being used as body parts for your robot.

You’ll want to go to your local hobby store and purchase a radio control car. These will run anywhere between $75 and $100, but you might get lucky and find one at a garage sale for much cheaper. Take out chassis and any other parts, with the exception of the wheels and the car’s base.

You’ll want two servo motors, which can be purchased at a hobby store. This is going to be what lets the robot move around. Take your servo motors and attach them to the car’s base. You can use double-sided tape or mount them on brackets. Get creative!

Connect the wires that are out of the servo with the battery. The wires will be labeled to help. You will need a soldering iron in order to completely this step. Than take the other wires and connect them with the remote’s receiver. Let it cool before testing out the robots.

Robotics and miniaturization have made modern prosthetics (artificial limbs) operate on a level unheard of just ten years ago. Engineers at Arizona State University in Tempe, Arizona, have developed the first prosthetic ankle that allows the wearer to walk on all types of surfaces, go up and down stairs and inclines with ease.

SPARKy, (for spring ankle with regenerative kinetics) weighs only four pounds and is lighter than most passive prosthetics. Led by engineering Associate Professor Thomas Sugar, a team has developed SPARKy over three years as part of an Army grant to help returning wounded soldiers. The ultimate goal of the project is to make the soldiers so mobile they can return to active duty.

SPARKy is specifically for below the knee amputees. The device allows a wider range of motion than previous prosthetics, and because it weighs less, causes much less fatigue.SPARKy uses a robotic tendon which stores and releases energy during walking using a set of springs. Because energy is stored, a battery run, lightweight motor regulates the walker’s gait. The engineers hope to miniaturize the motor further, making the device smaller and lighter, powered by the smallest lithium ion battery.

The device “reads” signals from the remaining part of the amputee’s leg and makes adjustments to the springs and motor. The wearer does not have to think about what they are doing and SPARKy becomes a normal foot.

The wounded soldiers who are testing SPARKy are very enthusiastic. Most do not want to give up the device because it is so much like walking normally. Professor Sugar and his associates enjoy the engineering challenge, but they are thrilled to be part of the rehabilitation solution for so many veterans.

NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration) has “Space Cookies”, but they aren’t edible. Space Cookies are an all-girl team competing in the annual For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology (FIRST) Contest sponsored by NASA. Teams of high school students design, produce and program robots in a national competition. Most of the teams are coed, but there are two single sex teams – the Space Cookies and the all-boy “Cheezy Poofs.”

The FIRST program is part of the National Robotics Alliance project of NASA, to encourage the next generation of scientists and mathematicians to become involved in space science and technology. Each year, FIRST announces a robotic challenge. Teams of young people are then given problem to solve, a standard kit of parts, and a book of rules. The teams have six weeks to complete a robot for the competition.

The teams are guided by mentors, NASA engineers, professors from local colleges and professional engineers, but the actual work is completed by the students. Knowing how to build a robot is not a qualification for the competition, so most of the students learn by doing.

The FIRST competition is just one of many programs NASA sponsors for children in an effort to inspire an interest in technology careers. Even kindergarten children are included and have interactive demonstrations and hands-on activities using robot construction kits. NASA also sponsors school programs through high school and summer camps throughout the United States.

The Space Cookies have been very successful. The first year they participated in the competition, they won the Rookie All-Star Award and a special judge’s award. Since then, they have won other several other awards, including one for Engineering Inspiration and Community Outreach.

The girls have taken away friendships that will last a lifetime, self-confidence, and a love of engineering and science. NASA’S Space Cookies are working.

This is not your Grandmother’s knee replacement surgery. The days of major surgery, long hospital stays, and painful rehabilitation are over for most of us.  Robotic surgery has created new possibilities for surgery – and improved quality of life for osteoarthritis (wear and tear arthritis) patients.

Partial knee replacement and resurfacing now offers pain relief for early to mid-range osteoarthritis patients. Robotic planning and surgery allow precise partial knee replacement that can vastly improve the patient’s quality of life and is particularly effective for younger, more active people.

After a preoperative CT scan, a computer generated, 3-D view of the joint shows the surgeon how much bone needs to be removed and where the implants need to replace the inflamed bones. The computer plan allows the surgeon to size and anatomically design the implants for the best fit.

During surgery, robotic instruments are inserted through small incisions. Using a burr saw attachment, the surgeon guides the robotic arm as it removes the damaged bone. The equipment is programmed to sound an alarm and stop if the burr saw wanders out of the predetermined area. The implants are then precisely fitted and checked by computer.

BENEFITS OF SURGERY

Robotic surgery can be performed early in the deterioration of the knee joint. In fact, waiting for surgery can lead to joints becoming deformed and muscles and ligaments may become weak, which may result in more invasive, complete knee replacement surgery.

Patients can help the ultimate outcome of their surgery by stopping smoking and watching their diet. They should also be as close to normal weight as possible and do mild exercise to strengthen their knee muscles.

Personal robots have not reached the widespread use like portrayed in television shows, even though technology is beginning to catch up with the imagination of science fiction writers. Still there are options for those that just have to own their own robot, as long as you can handle the $5,000 and up price tag. While it is true that some jobs will eventually get phased out by robots, there are many instances that even if a robot was designed to handle the job, our need for human interaction will keep it from being implemented. There does seem to be a shift in acceptability, however; we are seeing automation being embraced in ways that many did not think possible. For example, years ago people never thought automation would replace the one-on-one customer service of a bank teller, yet look at how many transactions are handled by ATM machines now. This doesn’t mean we are ready to have a robot serve us a meal in a restaurant, stitch us up at the hospital, or give us a new hairdo.

When technology changes things, we watch as jobs change along with it. At one time all ditches were dug by men with picks and shovels. The lack of gravity in space is actually more of a benefit than a challenge because robots can be heavier than their earth-based counterparts.  Being able to design one robotic piece of equipment to handle a multitude of tasks without worrying about it becoming too heavy to function is a definite advantage.

A challenge regarding space robot manufacturing is the ultra-high vacuum in space because anything with moving parts requires lubricants and most types will not work in this environment.

The tasks in space may be similar in some ways, but since extreme dexterity is necessary for many tasks in space, and failure so terribly costly, time must be taken in developing space robots carefully to meet the unique challenges with as low a threshold for failure as possible. It is likewise not an easy task to repair a robot that has worn out or failed in some way, so making ones that can stand the test of time and operate for as long as possible is essential.

Space robots may be challenging to design and produce, but they can do infinitely more than the human astronaut can do, so their use is likely to continue.

The United States Postal System (USPS) is working towards using robotics to sort packages by adding more automated systems each year. This not only protects its workers from anthrax and other dangers, but is a labor cost saving measure as well.

Anyone that has watched a drama series on television has seen bomb squads using a bomb disposal robot to investigate a suspected bomb and even to disable one. Today’s applications for robotics are ever pushing the artificial intelligence envelope. Through speech recognition, advanced machining, vision sensory and even touch recognition, today’s robots are demonstrating extreme productivity that just may make you think they are human.

The human brain does not only analyze facts and process them to solve a problem or issue. Social interaction is another part of brain activity that can seemingly be developed into a robot. Programming a robot to respond based on human voice makes it seem almost human but again it is simply programming, not thinking.

Robots have the brawn to replace humans; they do not “yet” have the brains.  And although it may be argued that they can be programmed to hold a conversation better than some people you know, they cannot be the brain for our poor scarecrow that will just have to rely upon what he already has.

In that way, robotics is going to move people into the future in amazing and interesting ways, so that they can do more than they used to be able to do. It will help make higher-quality products that cost less, and can even help people live longer than they would otherwise have been able to. It’s very important to keep these kinds of things in mind, but it’s also very important to realize that they have limitations. There are still many things that robots and robotic devices aren’t able to do. They may be able to perform other tasks in the future, but it’s not realistic at this point in time.

There’s nothing wrong with that, however, and the desire to learn and grow continues. There are scientists, engineers, and others who are constantly developing new robotic options. Some of them work well, and are put into mass production. Others do not work as well, and they are scrapped or re-worked until something better is found. It’s a trial and error business, but that doesn’t mean that it’s not valuable or that it shouldn’t be developed. Only through developing other things can more beneficial items ultimately be created.

That doesn’t mean that you won’t have to do any work, or that all of the answers to your problems will be right there online, but it does mean that you’ll be more likely to have options. Because you can get on the Internet and learn about so many different things, you can completely and thoroughly explore what you want to do with your life and the kinds of things that will help you get to where you want to go. From Sci-fi to reality, robots are beginning to pop up everywhere. Is this a man-made miracle, or our worst dreams come true? When computer technology first came about, the fear of robots taking over the world began to permeate the entertainment fields. Novels, movies, and even comic strips began to explore the idea of robotics. Whether the technological achievement was to help or hinder humans was up in the air.

It is hoped that the fiber optic link will allow signals to be passed from the artificial limb and the brain to allow the amputee to “mentally” move their prosthetic limb. 

This robotic patch technology is still certainly in its early development, but initial tests have proved encouraging. The race to develop this technology is international, and unlike Los Angeles apartments, this technology will prove to be very costly. The development of this kind of neurotechnology could have vast implications and could also greatly improve the quality of life for those who suffer from paralysis or amputation.

None of this technology would be possible without a robotic interface. The fiber optics involved in this process are so minuscule that the human hand would be incapable of manipulating them with any degree of success. It is hoped that this link between living tissue and a prosthetic device would be a result of thousands of sensitive sensors flowing through a single fiber.

Robots are used for many different dangerous missions. Other dangerous missions involve when the tethered robot, Dante II, descended into the active crater of Mt. Spurr in Alaska to traverse over rough terrain in an unforgiving environment. Dante II’s mission was to determine how much hydrogen sulfide, carbon dioxide, and sulfur dioxide exists in the gas emanating in the crater.

The Pioneer robot is another robot used to investigate hazardous environments. It is a remote reconnaissance system for analyzing the Chornobyl Unit 4 reactor building. It is basically a teleoperated mobile robot with multiple radiation and other environmental sensors. It utilizes a mapper to create realistic 3D models of the interior of the building.

There are two models of underwater robots  swimming and crawlers. The swimming craft is utilized in deeper water whereas the crawler crawls on the ocean floor through the surf in order to track down dangers where the water is too shallow for the swimmers. Crawlers can be launched from the shore which is an additional advantage over the swimmers.

Remus, a small torpedo-like robot was used in Iraq to enable the Navy to clear mines from the port of Umm Qasar. The Seahorse II is 27 feet long and a yard-plus in diameter. During the 72 hours The Seahorse II runs without communication or guidance with its handlers.

Scientists use underwater robots to pilot small craft down to extreme parts of the ocean where it is too deep or dangerous for human divers and for even small subs. Then there is the robot with a sense of touch. This robot dives into the sea and swims to the submerged cable that is in need of repairs. It completes the repair. However, it is not as simple perhaps as it sounds. The person guiding the robot has a difficult job because there is only a dim light attached to the robot. In dark murky waters and with a strong current it is difficult to maintain the robot on task with real time programming.

One of the main reasons robot technology is utilized is to accomplish dangerous missions. One of the most volatile is travel back and forth to space and residing even short periods in space. Unfortunately, there has been tragic loss of life in travels into space and back again. Keeping robots in a reliable operating condition in space also presents unique challenges for engineers who mastermind their creation. Two aspects most challenging are the ultra-high vacuum and the swing of temperatures.

The vacuum issue prevents the use of most lubricants and this is a necessary element in the efficient workings of robots. The temperatures vary drastically depending on whether the robot is in direct sun light or whether it moves into the shade.

The third challenge for robots in space is that there is no gravity. However, this may not be a challenge but rather a blessing because a robot that is being developed currently has 21 independent joints. On earth this jointed robot would not be able to support its weight but in space it has amazing capabilities.

Robots are not a new technology in space. A type of robot arm has flown on every Space Shuttle flight during the last twenty years of space history. The arm has a shoulder joint, an elbow joint and a wrist joint which is used as a mobile work platform to enable the astronauts to toss satellites into space and also to retrieve those needing repair or service and even the activating of a satellite that fails to launch into orbit properly.

So when we think of exploring the hostile expanse of the universe called space, robots have allowed humans to experience far more than would have be possible without them. We, as humans, have set foot on the moon, an amazing feat. But they, as robots, have set foot on the Moon, Venus, Mars, and Jupiter.

Mariner 2 accomplished a successful fly-by Venus in 1962. Sputnik 1 was launched in 1957 as the first robot in space. Dextre, a robotic arm, allows delicate manipulation of objects outside the station.

The surgeon has the option to use a type of visualization showing the exact operating field and gives the surgeon the option to review the safety of a particular incision by doing the actual manuever but solely through an experimental action. When the surgeon is satisfied with the procedure he or she gives the mechanism instruction to proceed in real time.

Medical precision, dangerous underwater exploration, and repairs on space stations may seem like logical robotic maneuvers. But who heard of a robot slopping hogs on the hog farm in west Iowa? The agro-bots are here and are working at taking over the laborious repetitive man hours of the over-worked mid-west farmer.

And whoever thought robots might be a resolution to the illegal immigration problem here in the United States. One robotic engineering company out of San Diego is working on a pair of robots to pluck fruit from the orange, apple, or plum trees in much the same way as a human would circumvent the tree looking for fruit and pluck it with a downward motion. Fleets of such machines could perform the labor-intensive task employing thousands of migrant workers each season.

And if you think about it, robotic equipment has been milking the cows for many years. Farmers are already using auto-steer technology to cut labor in half. Auto-steer is a technology requiring no more knowledge than operating a cruise control on any vehicle.

Auto-steer technology allows farmers to do strip-intercropping, as a sustainable farming system using GPS to guide the tractor down rows defined to eliminate over-lap thus saving fuel and time. This technology also allows farmers to engage in all aspects of farming two crops separately in 30-ft. swaths without overlap. The strip-intercropping system increases crop yields because of more access to light.

The robotic future of farming has a vision of the farmer sitting in an office far away from the farm, but still remotely tending, not one tractor, but several tractors on different farms.

So from the possibility of a robotic mushroom picker picking 24/7 to the Inflatable Conveyor Belt which can be deployed for crops to be processed to cool storage, washing, and sorting all while still in the field, the time has come for robots to be taking soil tests, wobbling down corn rows, blasting weeds, scouting for insects much like the R2D2 of Star Wars careened through a galaxy far, far away.

Scientists are developing a method for treating children with autism that utilizes a robot. Autism is characterized by difficulties understanding human language, repetitive behavior, and a lack of imagination. For reasons unknown, children in general are attracted to robots. The scientists and the medical professionals are considering the utilization of this attraction to enable the autistic child to learn a less repetitive behavior and to be better able to understand the human language. If this robot is appropriately designed, it could play an important role in treatment.

KASPAR (Kinesics and Synchronization in Personal Assistant Robotics), is a multi-million dollar robot that simulates sadness and surprise, smiles, and gesticulates. The purpose of the creation of KASPAR is the hope that it will encourage social interaction between autistic children and eventually with parents and other children. This is a humanoid robot which has actually begun testing in British schools.

KASPAR has video cameras in both of its “eyes and its mouth can open and smile. So the robot system uses non-invasive methods for sensing and interpreting the childs behavior in order to interact in a free-form play. The developers felt that this was a method to bring out a more social behavior from the child.

From elementary school to the highest University, technology has rapidly become integrated into the fabric of the teaching process. Some devices provide respiratory assistance through oxygen supplementation and mechanical ventilation. A brand new and already patented of ventilation method achieves what is known as Biphasic Cuirass Ventilation (BCV). BCV is extremely effective for individuals suffering from cystic fibrosis, COPD, and ARDS. The patient wears a shell on their upper body or a cuirass. This cuirass is connected to a pump which controls both sides of breathing inspiration and expiration. It is a biphasic type ventilation so it is able to achieve both large breaths which are referred to as tidal volumes to effect a high respiratory rate.

Other types of respiratory ventilation currently being used depend on the passive deflation of the lung whereas the biphasic function allows control over the ratio of the time allowed between inspiration and expiration. Another advantage of BCV is that it is more non-invasive and avoids infection associated with invasive ventilations.

Intravenous Technology
Intravenous therapy is utilized in many incidents in the hospital and in the EMS field but it is an area that is liable to human error. Some hospitals have a smart infusion technology that uses the deployment of a smart-pump. An experimental test was done with the technology where it also recorded data to evaluate its smartness. The data showed that the smart pump blocked two significant times when delivery of the IV medication was trying to exceed the limit or there was also an administrative error prevention. In both of these incidents harm could have come to the patient if the IV would have malfunctioned.

Who doesn’t have an email address nowadays? In fact, most of us have three or four: one for work, one for personal email, one for junk email, and one for professional personal email. It’s amazing how much we rely on email when twenty years ago, it was almost non-existent.

Well, Google has gone and decided to revolutionize the way we see email with their new Google Wave, a beta program that takes email and tweaks it to become so much more.

The first thing that’s amazing about Google Wave is that everything that is typed into a wave is shown in real time. That means that if someone is responding to your wave, you can see what he is typing as he’s typing it. If you don’t want your typing to be seen (if you’re a really slow typist, for example), then you can click an option to not be seen until you enter in the message.

Another thing that is great about waves is you can make changes even after they’ve been “sent.” This is great if you see a typo or if you change your mind later. The history of the wave can be seen so that if someone is like, “Wait a second. That’s not what it said,” then she can go back and see how it’s changed over time.

In that same vein, others can edit a wave. This is great if you’re all working on a project and you’re trying to get the wording just right. By being able to see the history of that wave, you can be sure not to lose any information while you’re working on each draft and everyone who has been added to the wave can see the changes as they’re being made.

This is just a small sampling of the mention features of Google Wave. There are many more and Google is working on developing more functionality all of the time. Robots have been the focus of novels since the industrial age and the idea of robots became possible. Despite the many novels that predict robots will one day turn on us and harm us, scientists and researchers continue to try and make robots a reality.

In Yaskawa-kun, Japan, there is a robot that dishes out ice cream at Tokyo Summerland, a theme park in the area. Patrons use a touch pad to select the size and flavor of ice cream cone, pay, and then get the cone – all without a human worker. The robot is made look somewhat human like with a large head and arms. A body twists from side to side to get the cone, fill it with ice cream, and then add toppings. It’s quite the novelty for patrons who buy ice cream from this vendor.

In England, there’s a company called Conceptioneering that has created an Artificially Intelligent Mechanical Electronic Companion 3, called Aimec 3. The robot can imitate voices, search online, snore when sleeping, and can even joke around.

The University of Hertfordshire in the United Kingdom is developing a robot that is capable of expressing emotion and learning from facial expressions and body language. The robot is able to form attachments to people and interact while showing emotions through its robot body. The researchers designed the robot to model how young children are and how they learn. Just like how young children learn to read social cues such as facial expressions and other social cues to learn how to interact socially.

In New Jersey, a company called True Companion has created robots for those who are lonely and need a companion. The robots are created to have deep conversation with the owners, though they aren’t able to move their arms or legs.

Advancements in robotics technology are being made each and every day. Companies developing robots are hoping to create robots that can do household chores, care for hospital patients, be a replacement for childless couples. It’s exciting to see where technology will get us.

Intel develops and manufactures computer chips that are used in many brands of PCs. The company believes that embedding security software into the chips will make computers and all devices that connect to the Internet more secure. Currently, antivirus and protection software must be downloaded and installed on each computer individually. This protects computers, but what about smart phones and tablets that connect wirelessly? They are often left unprotected open for hackers to invade and steal valuable information.

The idea with this purchase is to protect all computers and other wireless devices innately with the McAfee security software.

Still, many are questioning the deal. One of the major worries is that McAfee with be put on the back burner and not given the attention it needs to innovate to the next level. Also, chip manufacturers have traditionally not done well in the computer security market. Some believe that the purpose of this is for Intel to diversify into new markets because of the economic downturn. In 2009, Intel’s profits dropped by 17 percent to $4.4 billion. Computer owners are keeping their computers a little longer than previously, which is cutting into their profits.

However, McAfee’s profits were up by .7 percent. Not a huge margin, but many people are likely to want to protect their computers as a preventive measure so they don’t have to pay to have them repaired or be forced into purchasing a new computer. Companies are also concerned about security since trojans and worms can cause large profit losses from loss of data or servers that must be disconnected from networks to be repaired. It may be that Intel is hoping that this deal will help them to expand beyond the chip manufacturing niche, which is currently shaky at best. Only time will show whether this deal was a smart choice.

When thinking of the future of robots, when they may become caretakers to young children or the elderly when they are in need of help, many might think of monotone voices greeting people, unable to carry on a conversation. But in reality, researchers are already creating robots with the ability to develop emotions and attachments to those who care of it.

Nao is a robot that was created by Aldebaran Robotics, which is based in Paris. This little humanoid robot is able to play soccer, navigate its environment using infrared sensors, and address you by name (if it knows you). Now researchers, including Lola Canamero as well as some of her colleagues, to develop emotions similar to how a young child or a chimpanzee learns by interacting with others. This ability to grow with emotions is similar to a cyber-dog, Aibo, created by Sony that was also designed to adapt to its environment. It was discontinued, however. Nao has been programmed to show sadness, happiness, excitement, anger, fear, and pride.

What’s amazing about Nao is its ability to become attached to those who care for it, just like human infants do. For example, if its primary caretaker leaves it with a stranger, Nao will likely become agitated. Nao can remember what has happened in the past and will see that experience as something positive or negative.

These robots were introduced as tools to be used by autistic children in the United States. You might ask how an emotional robot would help. Basically, children who have autism are more able to relate to a robot than humans. The reactions of a robot are much simpler and the children are more able to predict how the robot will act and react to stimuli. The hope is for Nao to be used as a way to teach children with autism so they are able to gain skills that can help them learn to adapt to their environment and be more successful in school and at home with their family.

Robots are a critical aspect of all things today, but what many do not realize is just how instrumental they are in day-to-day living. In fact, one example a robot’s importance occurred just recently. Robots were a significant part of the cleanup effort in the Deep Water Horizon Gulf Oil Spill. Without their aid, it is clear that cleaning up such a large amount of oil would be nearly impossible.

Take a close look. Robots have been helpful in the oil spill in several ways. Many people have seen this occur by simply watching the video stream of the repair work on the rigging. Large robotic arms outstretched, moving pieces and parts and putting them in place to plug the hole. At one point, a large robotic arm worked seemingly on its own to move clamps to cut deep into huge structures to work to cap off the well. While there were people far above the surface of the water controlling such arms, the feat was still quite interesting.

Robots have helped with a variety of the cleanup efforts. Robots are partially responsible for digging the deep relief wells–two tunnels running alongside the initial rigging–to stop the flow of oil. The sensors on these devices were so sensitive and detailed that every few inches they had to stop and measure the pressure. These human-like devices have helped to power the cement streaming down into the wells to plug them for good.

While the robots used to repair the oil well were not the same type that you would buy with Kmart coupons, they are significant examples of what today’s robots can accomplish. If you are old enough to remember Robby the Robot (in the original Lost in Space), you have no doubt watched a slow but definite shift in robotics from being nothing more than a silly toy to being an actual, viable option for people to use in making their lives easier. Robots have been available (for exorbitant sums of money) since the 1980s. But only over the past few years have they started to enter the mainstream as anything more than a curiosity. If you have seen the little robots that clean the floors of some people’s houses, you have no doubt been wondering at the possibilities.

There have been numerous TV shows that have highlighted some of the successes of modern robotics. Some robots trawl around on Mars, collecting data and being the ultimate toy for some highly educated kids who will probably never entirely grow up. Some other robots are able to walk across the room, looking a good deal like human beings while they do so. And a few of the other kinds of robots can even do some rather impressive things, such as playing chess (complete with physically moving their own pieces) and playing table tennis at a level that challenges a good human player. Wouldn’t that just be the perfect gift for the type of person who loves to play ping pong, but has no actual friends with whom they can play? The real question is, without any friends, who would get the person such a gift?

While that may still be a ways off in the future, the notion that pretty much every job is going to be replaced is a scary potential reality.

When people pictured the 21st century 50 years ago, they may have imagined servant robots that cleaned the house for you. Wouldn’t that be nice? Unfortunately, we’re not there yet (though we may be by the end of the 21st century), but there are robots that will clean our floors. In fact, a new robot, the Mint, by Evolution Robotics, is made to sweep and mop your tile, linoleum, and wood floors. A robot that cleans floors isn’t new to the market. In fact, the iRobot’s Scooba has been around for almost five years.

One thing that makes the Mint stand out is the ability to use multiple types of cloths including Pledge and Swiffer cloths as well as reusable microfiber cloths, which results in it being very low maintenance. Scooba, on the other hand, needs a lot of maintenance and requires a cleaning solution. You need to fill and empty the tank before or after each use as well as cleaning out the tank. It’s also heavier than the Mint by 4 pounds.

In reviewing the two floor-cleaning robots, it was found that the Scooba did better at cleaning up dust bunnies under beds because of its four-stage cleaning system, which includes sweeping and washing and then brushing and using a squeegee on the floor.

With the Mint, it was found that it did catch a lot of hair and dust, but anything bigger was just pushed around instead of being sucked up when using dry cloths. When using wet cloths, it was more effective and because of its square shape, it was able to get into areas that the Scooba wasn’t.

The Mint also follows a more efficient cleaning path than the Scooba by mapping out the room using the included Navigational Cube. In deciding between the two, it comes down to whether you prefer cleanliness or convenience. Overall, the Scooba cleaned better, but it was loud while the Mint was quiet, and the Scooba needs a lot of maintenance to keep it working efficiently. The Mint is more of a light cleaner rather than a heavy cleaner like the Scooba.

In this day and age, with the Internet at your fingertips, why would you shop anywhere else? In minutes, you can find the best prices at multiple stores along with reviews of the products and detailed statistics allowing you to compare multiple brands and models.

Other features of Chrome include being able to duplicate a tab (including the browsing history of that tab), search your browsing history, and pull a tab out into its own window.

Try out the different browsers and see which one works the best for you. You may even find that you like one browser for one task and a different one for other tasks.

If you’ve ever worked remotely or telecommuted from home, you know what a unique experience it is to not chat with co-workers in the break room or hear about company news by the water cooler. There are a lot of things you miss by not actually being in the office, and it’s especially frustrating when you’re working on a project with many colleagues who are across the country causing you to often feel out of the loop.

That’s where Anybots’ QB comes in. This little robot is nothing more than a glorified webcam, but for remote workers who need to attend meetings, it can really make life easier. The idea of this robot is it can be controlled by a remote worker just using their computer and web browser. No special equipment necessary. At the corporate office, the QB sits ready to be used by a remote worker. It can be guided to a conference room for a meeting, down the hall to chat with the co-workers and managers, and into someone’s office to talk to them one-on-one.

There’s a webcam on the robot that allows the remote worker to talk to those around it and see who is there. There are some definite problems with this first-generation version of QB, however. These include not being able to see peripherally, not being able to go down stairs or call for an elevator, needing a strong Wi-Fi connection, and the cost of the unit, which is currently $15,000.

Still, for some companies, it may actually help to save money. For one, it would make sense for the QB to be used by several remote workers who share it depending on the workers’ needs. Two, it may save trips for the remote workers to fly to the corporate office to meet managers and co-workers. The QB really helps these remote workers build relationships and see who they’re talking to instead of only hearing a voice over a conference call.

It will take time for people to accept talking to a robot, however. Some just find the QB to be creepy.
