The answer is, many of these technological advances already do. Some impacts are more direct than others. However, many of the items developed by NASA make their way in some form or another into our daily lives.

Part of the funding NASA receives to have new technology developed is a request that the new advances make their way into our society in some way. NASA accomplishes this in many ways. They might have the research and development conducted by an outside company, who then retains the ability to use the research to develop a consumer product.

For example, the ever popular and current thermometers that can be used to take your temperature inside your ear quickly and more efficiently resulted from research and development by an outside company for measuring radiation that stars give off.

Many items from cell phones, to computer chips, memory foam, and even GPS can trace some roots back to technology for space exploration through NASA or through contracts NASA created with outside companies. However, NASA’s technology can influence our daily lives in other ways as well, such as inspiring or influencing panoramic picture technology, virtual tours, or technology used for special effects in movies.

Evolution Has Gone Beyond the Natural World

The many advances in technology, especially those that have occurred just over the last couple of years have spawned a new term: techvolution (a blending of the words technology and evolution.) Those new “life forms” (to continue the evolution theme), however, can be said to basically follow the same tenets as those of regular evolution; that is, survival of the fittest.

If a website cannot keep up with the demands placed on it because its creators and managers do not keep up with technology, it will quickly become obsolete. Websites that offer online degrees as well as other information must constantly be updated and maintained so that the information given will be the most current and active.

This is true of anything, including Smartphone and Internet memes (ideas that are introduced via the Internet and literally seem to “take on a life of their own” — again another reference to evolution.) Smartphone have moved far beyond the idea of providing users with cell phone technology; now they are basically hand-held computers.

And, if you’re still scratching your head over what exactly Internet memes are, here’s an example you should recognize:social media. You know FaceBook, MySpace, Twitter, and all those sites. This was an idea that one or more people came up with, invented it, just kind of threw it out to see what happened, and watched it grow beyond their wildest dreams.

As techvolution continues to occur, who knows what may come next? It will take things such as people earning online degrees, however, for techvolution to continue. When something cannot or does not move forward, it is destined for extinction. When people continue to take advantage of techvolution, however, it is almost certain this will not happen, or else if it does, it will be a long time coming.
